The 9th of November was declared the Day of Hungarian Sign Language by a resolution of the National Assembly of Hungary.

By its decision of 31 October 2017, the Hungarian Parliament endorsed the European Citizens' Initiative on the protection of autochthonous national minorities and language groups.

The Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy (MANYSI) held its second roundtable discussion on the media on 12 October 2017 in the Nádor street premises of the Institute.

On 8 October 2017, Professor János Péntek, member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy gave an interview with the title “No textbook preferred to bad textbook” to Tetőterasz (Rooftop) programme of Radio Kolozsvár (in Romanian: Radio România Cluj).

Attila Tóth, the Director of the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy was interview by Magyar Fórum, daily newspaper.

The Hungarian Legal Language Journal was published in July 2017 with the aim to ensure a better understanding of the legal technical language.

The Reformed Theological Academy of Sárospatak

Commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy and the Termini Research Network of the Hungarian Language organize a celebratory conference in the building of the Reformed Theological Academy of Sárospatak on October 13, 2017.

The Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Faculty of Csíkszereda (Miercurea Ciuc) of the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania and the Consulate General of Hungary in Csíkszereda organised a workshop-conference entitled „Linguistic Landscape and Linguistic Diversity” on 22-23 September in Csíkszereda.

The Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy (MANYSI) organised a conference on linguistic and social disadvantages with the title “At Home in Our Language? – Opportunities for All” on 12 September 2017 in the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. As MANYSI considers the language use of disadvantaged groups as one of the important components of the language strategy being prepared, our objective is the interdisciplinary research of the linguistic and social situation of people living in extreme poverty.

The Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy (MANYSI) organised a roundtable discussion on improving the comprehensibility of the language of public administration on 6 September 2017 at the National University of Public Service. The invited experts tried to find the answer to the question of what public administration institutions, civil servants and the representatives of the government and the academia can do so that citizens can better understand the communication of public administration bodies.

The Hungarian Language Strategy Institute (MANYSI) organised a conference on linguistic and social disadvantages with the title “At home in our language? – A chance for everyone!” on 12 September 2017, in the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The 26th Congress of Hungarian Applied Linguists on the central theme of asymmetric communication – asymmetric relations was organised in Pécs. The workshop titled “The challenges of teaching Hungarian in the 21st century” was organised by our colleagues on 31 August.

The next workshop of the series of events “Education in the mother tongue adapted to the needs of students” organised jointly by the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy (MANYSI) and the Hungarian Institute for Educational Research and Development was the consultation entitled “The National Core Curriculum (NCC) is the Language Strategical Foundation Stone of Education in the Mother Tongue”.

The Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy (MANYSI) organised the first roundtable discussion on 28 June 2017. The meeting was organised and chaired by Dr Vilma Eőry, advisor of MANYSI.

The Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy (MANYSI) held the first semi-annual session of the Advisory Board on 19 June 2017 in the Kosztolányi Room of Magyarság Háza (Hungarian House).

On behalf of the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy (MANYSI) Attila Tóth, director and Vilma ry, Ildikó Takács Kocsyné, József Maleczki and Szilvia Szoták participated at the 25th jubilee celebration on the invitation of the Transylvanian Association for the Cultivation of the Mother Tongue (AESZ) in Kézdivásárhely (Târgu Secuiesc) on 11-14 May 2017 (http://www.aesz.ro/magyarnyelvnapjai/)

The book “Neked van igazad?” (“Are You Right?”) written by Petra Aczél and the book titled “Informatórium: Szókalauz a kortárs információs kultúrához” (“Informatorium: Word Guide to Contemporary Information Culture”) written by László Z.Karvalics were supported by the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy (MANYSI). Both books were edited by Tinta Publishing House and the book launch took place on 2 May 2017 in the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. László Z. Karvalics’ book was introduced by Zoltán Bódi, head of division of MANYSI and the book of Petra Aczél was introduced by Zita Komár.

In recognition of her outstanding teaching and research activity of several decades dr Vilma Eőry received the Kazinczy-award in Győr on 23 April 2017.

Katalin É. Kiss, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was awarded the Bolyai Prize, the highest honour in Hungarian science. Professor É. Kiss is a member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy.
