The essay written by Brúnó Schütz, student at the Bolyai Secondary School in Szombathely on the lecture titled Style, Norm, and Accuracy delivered by Tibor Tóth, research fellow of our Institute on June 19 2018 in the “Walk” (Press and Education) Camp in Kislőd is provided below.

On June 19, 2018, Tibor Tóth, research fellow of our Institute gave a lecture titled Style, Norm, and Accuracy and held a workshop on the importance of media literacy and the use of the mother tongue for secondary school students at the Jóska Sobri Adventure Park in Kislőd.

On June 14, 2018, the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy organised a round table discussion on language cultivation. The discussion was about how to ensure the continuity of Hungarian language cultivation and to restore its prestige.

On 12 June, 2018, a workshop on the essay written by our colleague, József Maleczki about the most frequent anglicisms in the Hungarian language media was held in our Institute.

The conference aims at creating a forum where discussion about the relationship between language and education is possible in an interdisciplinary manner. It is planned to hold such conferene in a given theme every two years.

This year the Association for the Cultivation of the Hungarian Language is organising the fifth summer camp for linguists in Sátoraljaújhely, Széphalom.

On June 4th every year, Hungarians mark the day of the signing of the Trianon Treaty in 1920, which stripped Hungary of two thirds of its territory and turned 3.3 million Hungarians into ethnic minorities living in foreign countries.

The first Sunday of June is the day of teachers. Teachers’ Day has been celebrated in Hungary since the 1950s. Usually this is day when prizes related to education and pedagogy are awarded.

Anna Lehocki-Samardžić was elected the new head of the Department of Hungarian Language and Literature of the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. Anna Lehocki-Samardžić has been working at the Department since its establishment.

On 16 May, the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy organised a roundtable discussion with the delegates of the editorial offices of radio stations broadcasting in Hungarian in the Diaspora.

This year the Csíksomlyó Pilgrimage, the Pentecost Votive Pilgrimage of Hungarians organised since 1567 was held on 18-22 May in Csíksomlyó (Șumuleu Ciuc), Transylvania, Romania.

The Transylvanian Association for the Cultivation of the Mother Tongue organised the Sándor Csoma de Kőrös Mother Tongue Competition on 10-13 May, 2018 during the Days of the Hungarian Language in Nagybánya (Baia Mare).

The book titled “The Revitalisation of the Hebrew Language” by József Szécsi was launched on 2 May 2018 in the Kossuth Club (1088 Budapest, Múzeum utca 7.).

The finals of the Nice Hungarian Speech competition in 2018 for elementary and secondary school students (Kazinczy Competition) were organised in April. The national semi-finals of elementary school students from the Eastern and Western part of Hungary were organised on 6-8 April in Kisújszállás and on 12-14 April in Balatonboglár, respectively.

A five-week online competition titled “The Early Bird Catches the Worm” was organised for elementary school students in Kaposmérő and Kadarkút who could deepen their knowledge about idioms and proverbs through the game.

HuCER 2018: The Hungarian Educational Research Association – HERA is organising a conference titled Education – Economy – Society on 24-25 May 2018.

The I/2 and II volumes of the Moldavian Hungarian Dialect Dictionary were launched on 13 April 2018 in the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. 

On 13 April, the books published by the Termini Research Network of the Hungarian Language in 2017 were presented in the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The following publications were in the focus of the event:  Tudományköziség és magyarságtudomány a nyelvi dimenziók tükrében (Interdisciplination and Hungarology in the Light of Linguistic Dimensions); Szélrózsa (Compass Rose); Őrvidéki házinevek (Bynames  in Őrvidék); Nyelvek és nyelvváltozatok térben és időben (Languages and Language Varieties in Space and Time); A magyar nyelv jelene és jövője (The Present and Future of the Hungarian Language).
