By its decision of 31 October 2017, the Hungarian Parliament endorsed the European Citizens' Initiative on the protection of autochthonous national minorities and language groups.

The Hungarian Parliament welcomed the Minority SafePack initiative of the Citizens’ Committee of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) called “One million signatures for diversity in Europe”.  The aim of the initiative submitted to the European Commission is “to improve the protection of persons belonging to national and linguistic minorities and to adopt a set of legal acts to strengthen cultural and linguistic diversity in the Union”. It shall include policy actions in the areas of regional and minority languages, education and culture, regional policy, participation, equality, audio-visual and other media content, and also regional (state) support.

The Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy agrees with the initiative as linguistic and cultural diversity, one of the fundamental principles of the European Union can only be achieved and maintained if the rights, including the linguistic rights of indigenous European nationalities are granted.  Along with the Hungarian Parliament, the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy is encouraging Hungarians living in Hungary and abroad to support the initiative with their signatures.
